About The Great Ambassador Gathering

This is The Great Ambassador Gathering – re-igniting the movement to make education fair in Teach First’s 20th anniversary year.

After months of work behind the scenes we have put together a series of events, culminating in The Great Ambassador Gathering on Saturday 1 July, to celebrate 20 years of Teach First and focus on the work we need to do now to make education fair.

Do not miss this incredible opportunity to come together for connection, inspiration and commitment to action.

What's happening:

  • Week of 24 April – 385 ambassadors attended our Mini Ambassador Gatherings in 40 Pizza Express restaurants in towns across the country. Take a look here.

What’s happening at The Great Ambassador Gathering:

  • A festival for 2000 ambassadors, current programme members on directly delivered programmes and their family and friends  in the grounds of The Totteridge Academy
  • Inspirational opening and closing ceremonies including speeches from pupils and ambassadors.
  • Music from Orchestras for All, East London Arts and Music and One Degree Academy Choir
  • Discussions on how we can make education fair, led by over 50 Ambassadors working inside and outside of the classroom, from all cohorts and programmes, from all over the country.
  • Three zones where ambassadors leading social enterprises, schools and networks will be sharing what they do and how to get involved.
  • Children’s activities including forest school and arts and crafts.
  • Ticketed dinner for up to 120 guests with food from the school’s farm

Sessions

11:00 - 11:45

Opening Ceremony

A bit of the old Teach First magic from the Main Stage. The Totteridge Academy (TTA) Students, Brett, Russell and Ambassadors will inspire and challenge us. We will hear why realizing the potential of four million disadvantaged young people, is the most urgent issue of our time. We will reflect on why we did Teach First in the first place, what we have achieved together in the last 20 years, but also why we need to unite NOW in the fight to make education fair for the 20 years ahead. We will hear why great teachers, transformational school leadership, place-based change, a broad system of support, influencing policy and Teach First itself all need to be key parts of the solution. And Chris Fairbairn and his students will lead us in TTA’s year 11, pre-exam ‘chant’ to energise us as we break out into the sessions ahead.

12:00 - 12:50

Teach First teachers have huge impact which can shape a young person's future. This is clear from the panel who have all taught or been taught by another panellist.
Hear them tell their stories of what, or who, brought them into teaching, why Teach First, what drives them in the fight to make education fair, their biggest challenges, and favourite moments from the classroom.

Otega Ajuchi
Accenture - Technology Analyst

Jordan Holdsworth

12:00 - 12:50

Teach First Headteachers and their Senior Teams tell their stories of the communities they serve, the approaches they’ve taken to radically altering the opportunities for kids in their schools. They share the philosophies that drive them, the lowest points in their journeys as well as the outcomes they are most proud of and why others should take up the challenge of leading schools.

12:00 - 12:50

Two ambassadors are at the forefront of place-based change in the UK and are going about it in different, but equally powerful ways. Hear from Mei Lim of Reach Hub Feltham and Graeme Duncan from Right2Succeed on why they are convinced by the power of place-based change, what the contexts are that they are working in, what they have achieved so far and what they are learning. Find out where they agree and disagree. The session is chaired by Dame Julia Cleverdon who has also pioneered this work in the UK over the last 2 decades. Leave with practical models for pursuing place-based change.

12:00 - 12:50

The original vision of Teach First was that ambassadors would become leaders in ‘all fields’ – getting businesses to support kids, getting philanthropic money into education, setting up social enterprise interventions that did things that schools couldn’t and influencing change across society. Has this happened? Listen to ambassadors from a range of fields share their journeys, why this vision has value and how all ambassadors can leverage their leadership to make a difference, no matter what field they are in.

The Great Ambassador Gathering Dinner

We would like to invite ambassadors and current Teach First programme members to our dinner and drinks reception at 17:00 after the main festival event.

One of our beautiful stretch tent tents will be transformed into a community style meal where you will be able to sit down, converse with other ambassadors and current programme members and share a meal made from by the Chef of Totteridge Academy James Fox (former chef of Westerns Laundry). James and his colleagues from GROW and local farms will go on to explain their journey into schools and where the produce you will be eating has been sourced from including from school farm and social enterprise GROW.

There will be an ‘ask and offers’ session from all the ambassadors and current programme members in the room. This will allow you to ask for requests of support or for your own work and indicatives. You will then reach out and support other requests. If you would like support or give support to your community, this dinner is the time to reach out.

Your dinner ticket includes a two-course dinner and two alcoholic (or non-alcoholic) drinks. This dinner ticket is £45 per head excluding booking fee.

Every ambassador/current programme member is allowed to bring one paid for guest to the dinner. If you are planning to bring a guest, please purchase a second ticket for them. Get your dinner ticket now

Teach First is a nation-wide charity and the need is greatest outside of London. However, the consistent feedback from ambassadors from across the country was that London is the simplest, quickest place to travel to from the greatest number of locations. In addition, The Totteridge Academy offered a rare combination of being within 40 mins of Central London, itself representing an incredible ambassador transformation story and having ample green space in which to host a festival-style event that would enable 2000 members of the Ambassador Community to come together to be inspired, connect and commit to action.

It has been very difficult to find the perfect date! We wanted a date that was suitable for an outside festival, after exams, but before the summer holidays, as well as not clashing with any other major education events. With those constraints in mind, the 1st of July was the best option. If you would like to join London Pride, we recommend travelling to join the celebrations after closing ceremony.

If you are celebrating Eid al-Adha, we understand that it may be difficult to confirm your attendance until later. Please note that the final date to register for your ticket is Wednesday 21 June and the deadline to submit your travel and accommodation claim is Sunday 18 June.
We acknowledge that The Great Ambassador Gathering may coincide with Eid al-Adha, and it may be difficult to confirm your attendance until the last moment. With the event being on a field we are working hard to ensure the event is accessible to everyone.
